2009 Track and Field Season

VANCOUVER OLYMPIC CLUB MEET, April 25

Kajaks Elementary-aged athletes were off to a great start at the first meet of the season. Sara Cathcart showed excellent form winning the long jump, while Gurleen Bhandal took gold in shot put. Among the boys Connor Forsyth won the high jump and finished third in shot put, while Jamieson Lee and Levi Ursel were off to a good start in their first competition.

NORWESTERS MEET - Burnaby, May 2-3

Sara Cathcart had excellent results in long jump and 400m, while Gurleen Bhandal excelled in the throws once more, easily winning the discus, while Christopher Gaio put in an excellent performance to take 4th in 400m.

Kajaks High School Meet - Richmond, May 9

Our athletes were outstanding at the Kajaks HS meet, with Asianna Covington winning all three of her throws events, and Pauljit Bhandal winning two and taking bronze in shot put. Petri Daviel took the bronze medals in her two throwing events. Jumper Olivia McNair won the Junior
long jump, but unfortunately fouled in triple jump. Nicholas Fyffe jumped over 6.13m to finish 3rd in LJ, competing in the senior event. Runners Linus Wong and Patrick Riddell just missed out on the medals in their events.

Junior Olympics - Surrey, May 16-17

Kajaks JDs did very well at the Junior Olympics meet, winning 6 medals. Gurleen Bhandal won both her throws events, and Connor Forsyth took 2nd in Discus and 3rd in High Jump. Sara Cathcart took silver in Long Jump and finished 4th in 60m, and Marc Ashford won bronze in 200m.

Fraser Valley HS Invitational - Surrey, May 25

Our throwers were off to a great start, with Asianna Covington off to a great start, winning all her throw events, and setting a meet record in hammer, with Petri Daviel setting two PBs. Pauljit Bhandal also put in some excellent performances winning Hammer and Discus, and coming 3rd in SP (actually 2nd place in his SP weight category).

Jumpers Nick Fyffe and Olivia McNair had a great start to the season, with Nick winning the long jump, and Patrick Riddell took 3rd in 800m.

BC Elementary Championship - Richmond, May 22-24

Kajaks JDs were out in force at the BC Elementary Championships at Minoru, held in hot sunny weather. Connor Forsyth jumped 1.48m to take bronze in High Jump. Just missing a medal were Sara Cathcart with a 4th place finish in 100m, and 5th place finishers Julia Wilshire in 100m and Derek Jeary in Discus. Other top 10 finishers were Gurleen Bhandal with two 6th places in throws, Paarus Kahlon (7th 800m), and Levi Ursel (8th= High Jump).

Results from the BC High School Grade 8-9 Meet, Burnaby June 5th-6th

Many of our 14 and 15-year old athletes competed in the Grade 8-9 Invitational events at the BC High School Championships last weekend.

Pauljit Bhandal provided an exciting finish by taking gold in the Discus event on his final throw, after fouling his two previous attempts. Nick Fyffe took silver in Long Jump and bronze in the 4x400m relay, while Petri Daviel threw a PB to take the bronze medal in the Discus event.

Other top 10 finishers were Olivia McNair, 4th in long jump, John Kairis-Cates also 4th in long jump, Melissa Holyk, 6th in 200m, Nick Fyffe 9th in 200m, and Mark Kalmykov 10th in Discus.

Jesse Bent Memorial Meet, Coquitlam June 12th-14th

Kajaks had excellent results at Coquitlam. John Kairis-Cotes led the way finishing in first place in all 4 of his events: 100m, 200m, Long Jump and Shot Put. Other gold medallists were Connor Forsythe in Javelin, Gurleen Bhandal in Discus, and Olivia McNair in Triple Jump. Petri Daviel won both discus and hammer.

Distance running was represented by Patrick Riddell, who took 3rd in 1500m. Jamieson Lee put in a solid performance with a 5th place finish in 400m, and Connor Forsythe just missed a medal with a 4th place finish in High Jump.

Langley Pacific Open Invitational Meet, June 19th-21st

Our athletes had excellent results at the Langley meet, with 11 athletes bringing home 17 medals between them, 8 of which were gold.

In throws, once again Pauljit Bhandal, Gurleen Bhandal and Petri Daviel were in very good form, either winning or finishing 2nd in their events. Derek Jeary also had an excellent win in Discus, and Connor Forsyth took 2nd place in Javelin and 3rd in Discus.

Connor also came in 2nd place in high jump, and our other horizontal jumpers/sprinters were also in great form. Olivia McNair dominated the jumps, winning both long and triple jump, and placing 2nd in 100m. Nick Fyffe was also in good form, winning long jump and 200m, and finishing 3rd in the 100m. Melissa Holyk was also in action, coming in 4th in the 200m.

Our long distance runners also did very well. Patrick Riddell came in 5th in both 1500m and 800m, and Paarus Kahlon had excellent races, finishing 2nd in 400m, 3rd in 800m and 4th in 200m, while Lachlan Macaulay came in 8th in the 800m.

Jack Brow Meet, Kelowna, June 26th-28th

The few Kajaks athletes who made the trip to Kelowna had excellent results, with John Kairis-Cates and Asianna Covington winning all their events. Gurleen Bhandal won discus, while Petri Daviel came 2nd in Hammer and Discus, and Autumn Covington 2nd in Shot Put and Discus. Pauljit Bhandal unfortunately was injured while throwing Discus, and was unable to compete in hammer. Patrick Riddell put in some solid performances in middle distance running.

Trevor Craven Memorial Meet, Burnaby, July 3rd-5th

Our athletes had another excellent weekend at the Trevor Craven meet in Burnaby. Several athletes set personal bests, and four athletes (Egidio Cantarella, John Kairis-Cates, Nick Fyffe and Asianna Covington) won every event they entered. Nick Fyffe's triple jump of 13.20m would have placed 3rd in the BC High Schools, and is only 30cm short of the Kajaks club record for this age group, that has stood for almost 30 years!

The eight JD and four Youth-15 athletes who competed brought home a total of 17 gold, 9 silver and 3 bronze medals!

BC Jamboree meet, Abbotsford, July 10th-12th

Our 15-year-old athletes were in good form at the Jamboree Meet, except for Pauljit Bhandal, who has been unable to train for two weeks due to an ankle injury. He was not able to produce his best form, and finished 4th.

Nick Fyffe, however, was in excellent form, and performed fine jumps to win triple and long jump, exceeding the BC team standards for these events. Our other jumpers were Adrian Francis who finished 5th in Triple and 11th in Long Jump, and John Kairis-Cates, 6th in Long Jump.

Olivia McNair was also in action, finishing 4th in Triple Jump and 6th in Long Jump. Sprinter Melissa Holyk finished in 8th spot in the 200m, and middle-distance runner Patrick Riddell put in good runs to come in 5th in 800m and 6th in 1500m.

BC JD Pentathlon, Coquitlam, July 18th

Six athletes made the trip to Coquitlam for the JD Pentathlon. This consists of five events: sprint hurdles, shot put, high jump, long jump and 800m. Connor Forsythe and John Kairis-Cates just missed a medal, finishing in 4th place.

JD Championships, South Surrey, July 24th-26th


Petranella Daviel, 2nd in Hammer F14

Our athletes had a great final meet of the season at the JD Championships hosted by Ocean Athletics in hot sunshine. Many athletes set personal bests. Egidio Cantarella was outstanding, winning all three of his sprint events in excellent times. Also outstanding was Asianna Covington, who won all three throws events in fine style. Our jumpers were also in great form, with Sara Cathcart winning Long Jump, and finishing 3rd in High Jump, and Jamieson Lee also 3rd in High Jump.

Our throwers also did very well. Autumn Covington easily won hammer, and placed 2nd in discus and shot put. Gurleen Bhandal was unable to find her best form due to the heat, but still finished 2nd in Discus and 7th in shot put. Petri Daviel finished 2nd in hammer behind Asianna, and although off-form in discus, still managed to take 3rd place. Mark Kalmykov (a second club member) won hammer and finished 3rd in discus. Valerie Wideski just missed a medal in Javelin, placing 4th, although throwing with a broken left arm.

Injured and unable to compete were John Kairis-Cates, and Vicky, who twisted her ankle on the Friday evening on her way to the track.
